Ah, Japan… yes it really is that weird.。

Of all the ‘only in Japan’ experiences that I can recall, I think my favourite occurred in Okinawa. I was scuba diving (they have excellent diving in Okinawa), and I was out on the dive boat, and it was during the surface interval between dives. Myself and an American were the only non-Japanese speakers, so we chatted together whlist everyone else chatted in Japanese. So far, so normal.。

Then suddenly, these two middle age ladies pull out two giant sets of underpants, and put them on over their wetsuits. On the backside was written something in kanji characters. I don’t speak Japanese, and I certainly can’t read it, so I have no idea what they said.。

Anyhow the two ladies then proceeded to strike a pose, basically bending over away from the group presenting their derrieres, and then looking backward with a finger on the lips naughty schoolgirl style (picture for reference).。

Then a couple of men (who may or may not have had some prior connection with the ladies) went up and pretended to spank them. And, of course, this being Japan everyone was taking photos of this the whole time whilst chattering excitedly.。

Afterward the American and I just looked at each other and shrugged. Like: it’s Japan, what are you going to do?。

啊,日本…是的,真的很奇怪。

我当时在潜水（冲绳有很棒的潜水设施）,我在潜水船上,其他人都用日语聊天,所以我们一起聊天,那是在潜水之余的休息时间,在我能回忆起的所有“只在日本”的经历中,我想我最喜欢的是冲绳,我和一个美国人是仅有的不会说日语的人,到此时为止,一切正常。

所以我也不知道那些汉字是什么意思,当然也不会读,我不会说日语,背面写着汉字,突然间,两个中年妇女拿出两条大裤衩,穿在潜水衣上。

然后那两位女士接着摆出一个姿势,摆出一副调皮的女生风格,随便啥意思吧,基本上就是弯下腰离开人群人群展示她们的臀部,然后回头把手指放在嘴唇上。

然后,几个男人走上前,做出要打她们屁股状,当然,这是日本,每个人都在拍这张照片,同时兴奋地聊天。

事后,那个美国人和我只是对视了一眼,耸了耸肩,就像在说：这就是日本,习惯就好。

我在一个办公室的厕所里撒尿,这时进来一个女孩,许多年前,在我30岁的时候,就在我旁边用洗手盆。

她看着我,问了我一些问题,而我还把着老二放水,作为新加坡人,这种事可不常碰到,在日本的办公空间很贵的情况下,这是一种男女通用的厕所。

I don''t think I believe your story. Without further explanation it''s just not plausible (especially not in Japan, I would have said).。

Anyone who has spent time there would know that, which makes me think perhaps you''ve never actually been to Japan. I can say with the utmost certainty that the incident, as you''ve described it, did not happen.。

If you can provide additional information, such as you and your friend were actually extras on a low-budget soft porn. flick, then it might make sense. But I have to say, outside of cheap movies, incidents such as you describe never, ever, ever happen in Japan. Ever.。

And, by-the-way, Japan really isn''t that 'weird'. Very far from it. Indeed, it''s almost entirely predictable, unsurprising and, dare I say it, ''normal'' (whatever that means).。

I’ve lived in Japan for almost a year and can condfirm that there are different aspects of subculture that exist their only available to native Japanese men that probably would appal many “normal” person from western culture. I don’t find this story that strange and it can definitely be true.。

I’ve lived in Japan for almost years in total, 3 for job and almost two as a student. Two in a French workplace and one in a Japanese one.。

One of the biggest shocks I experienced is the general relationship between men and women. Past a certain age (8–9) boys and girls seem to be embarrassed by the presence of individuals of the other sex. An illustration is how, in any “circle” or “club activity” I’ve been, even among adults and “shakaijin”, when the club head calls everyone to give a speech or what, men and women end up being naturally “separated” with men on one side and women on the other. Any attempt to speak to the other side is met with giggles and jokes along the line of “wow such a womanizer”. Don’t people believe in friendship between men and women here ? Having friends of the opposite sex if you have a girlfriend will also be seen ultra suspiciously by your significant other (she was however perfectly fine with me going to “kyabakura” - “that’s what men do right ? I don’t care-)。

Another small shock is how people like to have some background noise everywhere. If I enter into an empty and silent restaurant, the owner will directly put either the tv on or some music in the background. I’m used to eat in silence, lingering over coffee for one hour reading the newspaper or anything, or just being absorbed into my own thoughts. I come from a culture where eating in silence is valued and seen as proper manners (eating watching tv or doing anything else aside eating is seen as unrefined in France although young people today tend not to care) so always kinda shocked at this.。

For the positives, always surprised at how nice and helpful some people can be, especially in smaller cities. One thing that surprises me also is how most people have an artistic talent : painting, photography, haiku, instrument… thanks to the prence of club activities in school.。

The extremely devout efforts to maintain order and make their country a good place to live in, is something worth appreciating. Small things which can make a huge difference to the country as whole, are extremely integral to their culture. Few of them (which I realized) are:。

The highly categorized and organised garbage management system, implemented not only in households and malls, but even in highly advanced industries and offices. Every waste, however small it may be, is segregated into recyclable units and collected separately. All the separation is done at the very point of waste generation, however time consuming it might become.。

The extreme politeness, which is heart of the Japanese Language, is at opposite diameters from our culture. They would, shrink (literally & figuratively) on the smallest of offences and will drown you in the pool of thankfulness for the smallest of favors..:)。

使自己的国家成为一个适宜居住的地方,能对整个国家产生巨大影响的小事,他们极其虔诚地维护秩序,却是他们文化中极其重要的一部分,这是值得赞赏的。

甚至在高度发达的工业和办公室中也实施,不仅在家庭和商场中实施,都被分成可回收的单元,所有的分离都是在废物产生的时候进行的,高度分类和组织化的垃圾管理系统,所有废品,不管它有多小,并分别收集,不管这会耗费多少时间。

It is by virtue of the language and helpfulness that anyone can fall in love with the country. Often it happens that they go a long way with you, just so that you get your directions right.。

Infact, its a popular saying that you can go around Japan, knowing just 2 words, Arigato Gozaimasu (Thankyou) and Sumimasen (Sorry). It couldn''t believe it for myself in the beginning, but later realized it to be very very true.。

Finally, though difficult to put into words, but something I personally feel makes a huge difference is, an unconditional sense of care for their country. Some say, they inculcated it after the huge setbacks they suffered from the World War II. Whatever drives it, it makes them take pains and make sacrifices, which might be considered crazy in other countries. For instance, It drives, all strata of people, from the factory workers to the company owners, to use the public transport and also to clean their own offices and furniture.。

Whatever other countries, primarily the western world, might think about Japan, I believe they have been enormously successful in nurturing a strong culture and a beautiful world not only for themselves but also for the generations to follow.。
